The Veteran Light Study
INFORMATION ABOUT THE VETERAN LIGHT STUDY:
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a home bright light treatment on chronic back pain in US veterans. Throughout the entire study you will need to wear a wrist monitor, which is worn like a watch. The home bright light treatment used in this study is a standard bright light treatment that has been used for many years without negative health consequences. In addition to bright light, you will collect saliva samples on three evenings at home.
The study is 23 days long with a 1 month follow-up. On the first day of the study you will need to come to the lab for 1-2 hours (Lab Visit 1) to go through the rules and restrictions of the study, sign a consent form and undergo pain tests. For the first 7 days of the study you will be sleeping at home according to your usual schedule while answering daily questionnaires on pain, mood, and sleep on an electronic diary and also filling out two paper logs.
On Day 8 of the study you will visit the lab (Lab Visit 2) and be given a kit for saliva collection which you will do at home that evening. The samples will need to be collected in dim light according to a precise schedule and you will be given a checklist and timer (as part of the kit) with set alarms to help you take the saliva samples at the correct time. You will complete the saliva collection and after your last sample you will need to go to bed to sleep. Two research assistants will come to your house the next day to collect the samples and will also set up the light boxes for your daily bright light treatment.
For the rest of the study you will sleep according to your regular sleep schedule and every day, shortly after you wake up, you will have a 1 hour bright light treatment. You must remain seated in front of the bright light boxes for the entire hour. During this time you may watch TV or movies, read or engage in other sedentary leisure activities. Laptop/tablet/phone use is also allowed.
You will have two more saliva collection sessions (Day 15 and Day 22) and will visit the lab on those days before the saliva collection session to pick up kits (Lab Visit 3 and Lab Visit 4). Two research assistants will visit you the day after the saliva collections (Day 16 and Day 24) to pick up the kits and take the samples back to the lab. On Day 24, the last day of the study, the research assistants will also pick up the light boxes. During this entire time you will continue to answer the daily questionnaires on the electronic diary and fill out the paper logs. You will also be asked to continue with electronic diary questionnaires and paper logs for an additional month after the 13 day bright light treatment ends.
You can earn a possible total of $825 if you complete the entire study successfully:
• $200 earned after successful completion of every saliva collection session (3 sessions)
• $225 earned after successful completion of 30 day follow up.
• We prefer to mail total earnings as 1 check at end of the study.
• However, if you choose to, you can request checks after each saliva collection session.
• Checks take 3-4 weeks to arrive.
